BURKITT MEDAL FOR BIBLICAL STUDIES 2006
PROFESSOR GRAHAM STANTON
Professor Graham Stanton, Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity in Cambridge, came from New Zealand to this country for his doctoral work, and has made a highly valued contribution to British New Testament scholarship.
He has served as editor of the journal New Testament Studies and President of the international society for New Testament study, and is New Testament editor of the International Critical Commentary series.
His research has ranged from early Christian preaching, the interpretation of the gospels, and the beginnings of their manuscript tradition, to the place of the book in early Christian culture; and he has done much to reintegrate New Testament work with the study of second-century Christian literature.
His committed teaching and personal influence have helped to maintain New Testament study as a scholarly discipline linked with classical, patristic, and Jewish studies, and to mediate it to a wider public.
