Romancing the Stone: monuments to heroes post Waterloo

Alison Yarrington (University of Leicester)

This paper will be concerned with the ways in which sculptural commemorative monuments were active elements in symbolising political, regional and/or national concerns in the post Waterloo period, through the codification of collective memory. The reception of such works and the romantic discourses that ensued will be examined with particular reference to the inter-relationship between text and image.
