Professor Paul Preston, FBA is Príncipe de Asturias Professor of Contemporary Spanish History, and Director of the Cañada Blanch Centre for Contemporary Spanish Studies, London School of Economics and Political Science. His publications include The Coming of the Spanish Civil War: Reform Reaction and Revolution in the Spanish Republic 1931-1936 (London: Macmillan, 1978), The Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 (London, Weidenfeld & Nicolson; New York, Grove Press, 1986) and The Triumph of Democracy in Spain, (London and New York, Methuen, 1986). His book Franco: A Biography (Harper-Collins, London, 1993) won The Yorkshire Post Book of the Year in 1993. He is currently working on an extensive study of the repression during the Civil War and after, to be published by Harper Collins with the title The Spanish Holocaust.

Professor Angel Viñas has been variously professor of economic history at the University of Madrid, a junior minister in the late 1970s, EU Ambassador to the United Nations, senior adviser to the Spanish Foreign Minister for much of the 1980s and is currently Counsellor with the Spanish permanent representation to the European Union at Brussels. He is author of a number of the standard works on the Franco regime such Franco's relations with Nazi Germany during the Spanish Civil War; Spanish-Russian relations during the Spanish Civil War; Franco's survival of the Cold War and Spain's foreign trade under Franco. His publications include El oro de Moscú: alfa y omega de un mito franquista (Barcelona: Grijalbo, 1979), Franco, Hitler y el estallido de la guerra civil. Antecedentes y consecuencias (Madrid: Alianza Editorial, 2001), and En las garras del águila. Los pactos con Estados Unidos, de Francisco Franco a Felipe González (1945-1995) (Barcelona: Editorial Crítica, 2003).
