Giuseppe Mazzini and the Globalization of Democratic Nationalism 1805-2005
Abstract
Mazzini's internationalism in context:
national and international relations in the democratic political thought of the Risorgimento
Maurizio Isabella, Cambridge
This paper looks at Mazzini's vision of international relations in the context of Risorgimento politics. It provides an overview of the discussions about the establishment of a new world order among Italian democrats, liberals and moderates, from the 1821 revolutionaries to catholic thinkers like Balbo and Gioberti. It argues that Mazzini's vision of international relations was heavily influenced by the ideas of the early liberals involved in secret societies and in the European and extra-European revolutionary movement before the establishment of 'Young Europe'.
