Giuseppe Mazzini and the Globalization of Democratic Nationalism 1805-2005

Abstract

The 'Young Europe' project

Roland Sarti, Massachusetts

The founding of Young Europe in 1834 coincided with a moment of crisis in Mazzini's personal life and political itinerary. A troubled but defiant Mazzini responded to criticism of his political initiatives from friends, rivals, and enemies by re-examining his methods and objectives. In doing so, he sharpened his ideas on religion, revolution, nationality, and international solidarity. Thus, the launching of Mazzini's European project marks an important moment in the development of the Mazzinian creed and provides a vantage point for a re-evaluation of his legacy.
