Ye shall know them by their names: names and identity among the Irish and the English
Paul Russell (Cambridge)
This paper will consider some of the methodological problems associated with identifying and accounting for the presence of Irish personal names in Anglo-Saxon England and English names in early Ireland. It will approach the issue mainly from the point of view of onomastics. How are they to be identified? What are the name forms involved (dealing in particular with the short form of names)? What is particularly Irish or English about them? And what can any of this tell us about contact?
