British Academy-Royal Irish Academy Joint Symposium

Anglo-Saxon/Irish Relations before the Vikings

12-14 October 2005

The British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH

PROGRAMME

Organised by:
Professor James Graham-Campbell, FBA, and Dr Michael Ryan, MRIA

The nature and extent of Anglo-Irish relations in the early medieval period has been a relatively neglected topic during the last decade, given the attention that has recently been accorded to the Viking Age in the Irish Sea region. This symposium, sponsored jointly by the British Academy and the Royal Irish Academy, has been organised so as to provide an overview of recent advances concerning connections between Ireland and Anglo-Saxon England during the earlier period. It brings together twenty speakers from throughout Britain and Ireland, together with two distinguished guest speakers from Germany and USA.  It is anticipated that the proceedings of this cross-disciplinary symposium, consisting of four thematic sessions, will make a lasting contribution to scholarship, whilst stimulating debate on current issues and opening up new avenues for exploration.

Papers published in 2009 as Anglo-Saxon/Irish Relations before the Vikings, edited by James Graham-Campbell & Michael Ryan (Proceedings of the British Academy, 157)
