Roman Mythology: was there any?

Chairman: Professor Malcolm Schofield, FBA, University of Cambridge

The British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1

Monday 14 February 2005
6.00-7.30pm
followed by a complimentary drinks reception

Orpheus, Oedipus, Heracles, the Sphinx, the Gorgon, the Golden Fleece, Leda and the Swan: Greek myth is endless. Where are the Roman myths that resonate? Did the Romans have no myths? If not, why not? Or are we looking in the wrong places?  A major new book by Peter Wiseman ransacks art, history, literature, the archaeological record and the evidence of street theatre to offer an ambitious reconstruction of The Myths of Rome. Its claims will be probed and debated by the panel.

This event will take the form of a panel discussion between Dr Mary Beard, University of Cambridge, Professor Denis Feeney, Princeton University, and Mr Nicholas Purcell, University of Oxford
