Friends of Herculaneum Society Study Day sponsored by the British Academy Herculaneum: Scholarship, Reception, Prospects Convenors: Professor Robert Fowler, University of Bristol, Dr Dirk Obbink, University of Oxford, and Mr Nigel Wilson, FBA, University of Oxford Saturday, 4 March 2006 £10 (£5 concessions) ABOUT THIS EVENT | PROGRAMME. Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Less well known than its larger neighbour, this World Heritage Site offers in some ways an even more fascinating insight into the Roman world of the day owing to its better state of preservation, and its character as a luxury seaside resort. The buildings include the spectacular Villa of the Papyri which in the eighteenth century yielded the only library to survive intact from classical antiquity. The future of the partly excavated Villa and other unique buildings on the site, now under some threat, is one of the issues explored by a panel of internationally distinguished speakers. Other topics include the place of Herculaneum in the Roman world, the papyri, new technologies in archaeology, the art of Herculaneum, and the volcanology of the Bay of Naples. < back |
