'Hot in the City' - Urban Latin America in Film and Music

A one day conference supported by the British Academy in partnership with
the University of Manchester and the Manchester Museum

Convened by Professor Peter Wade, Centre for Latin American Cultural Studies, University of Manchester

Venue: Manchester Museum, Oxford Road, Manchester , M13 9PL (map key reference: No. 44)
(with an evening event at the Instituto Cervantes, 326-330 Deansgate, Manchester M3 4FN)

Friday 26 October 2007

This exciting event, open to the general public, aims to bring together academic researchers, musicians, film producers and writers to present a view of Latin American cities that recognises but also challenges the popular stereotype of chaotic, violent over-crowded and poverty-stricken urban environments that is often the way Latin American cities are represented.

The event will use music and film as accessible routes into the everyday experience of urban Latin America. We have invited a range of exciting speakers, some of whom will be illustrating their presentations with music and film: they are all interested in the urban experience and the city as a specific type of space and environment. In the evening, there will also be a celebration, with Latin music hosted by the Instituto Cervantes.
