Britain in the 50s: Consensus or Conflict?

Tuesday 19 February 2008, 7.00-8.30pm

followed by a drinks reception

The British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1

A British Academy discussion evening convened by:
Garry Runciman FBA, University of Cambridge

Speakers:
Peter Hennessy FBA, Queen Mary, University of London
Ross McKibbin, FBA, University of Oxford

Public interest in the political, economic, and cultural history of Britain in the 1950s has been recently heightened both by the publication of Peter Hennessy's Having It So Good and Andrew Marr's television series. The speakers and discussants will be asked to address rival interpretations of the decade in terms of conflicts (or their absence) not only of class but also of generation, ethnicity, gender, and religion and region.
