Water and Society: Past, Present and Future
9 & 10 NOVEMBER 2009
Royal Society, 6–9 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1 5AG
Convenors: Professor Steven Mithen FBA, Sir Brian Hoskins FRS,
and Dr Emily Black
The availabilty and continuity of provision of fresh water is vital for human society and has been a key influence in the world’s social and economic development over the last 20,000 years. Changes in its future availability will be one of the most important impacts of naturally occurring climate variability and human-induced climatic change, particularly in semi-arid regions. Sessions on the past, the present and the future of water supply will bring together experts from a wide range of disciplines including archaeology, geography, development studies, hydrology and meteorology.
