For over a century, International Women’s Day has celebrated the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. The sociologist, economist and social reformer Beatrice Webb was the first woman to be elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1931. On 8 March 2012, the British Academy is holding a special event to honour the women working in the humanities and social sciences since Beatrice Webb’s election, and acknowledge their contribution to research and scholarship.

Contributors will talk about women who have and who continue to inspire them and celebrate their achievements. The event will include a panel discussion ‘Gender in the academy’.

The event will be introduced by Rt Hon Baroness Hale DBE FBA, Justice of the Supreme Court, Chancellor, University of Bristol
