British Academy: The UK's National Academy for the Humanities and Social Sciences
Scotland and the United Kingdom
10.30am - 4.15pm, Tuesday, 28 February 2012
Venue: The British Academy, 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH
This conference, hosted by the British Academy, is the first leg of a two part conference jointly organised with the Royal Society of Edinburgh. It is intended to bring further academic evidence and analysis to bear on the current debates surrounding Scotland’s relationship with the rest of the United Kingdom, and to inform and challenge the discussions both inside Scotland and in Westminster about the future of this relationship.
The London meeting will examine the three options that may emerge from the proposed referendum (independence; “devolution-max”; and the proposals in the current Scotland Bill) and explore the implications of each for the relationship between Scotland, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
The second leg of the conference will be hosted by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, in Edinburgh, in April 2012.
Speakers include:
Professor Iain McLean FBA, University of Oxford
Stephen Noon, Scottish National Party
Professor Michael Keating, University of Aberdeen
Professor Jim Gallagher, University of Glasgow
Professor Charlie Jeffery, University of Edinburgh
Guy Lodge, Institute for Public Policy Research
Rachel Ormston, Scottish Centre for Social Research
Professor David Bell, University of Stirling
