The Sanctuary at Keros: Questions of Materiality and Monumentality

This lecture focused on the discovery – initially as a result of looting – of the sanctuary on Keros, in the Cycladic islands of Greece. Archaeology has revealed one of the earliest regional ritual centres in the Aegean, dating from the third millennium BC. The deposition of deliberately broken symbolic materials, mainly of marble, poses questions of interpretation. Colin Renfrew explored why the location of deposition at the sanctuary contrasts strikingly with the monumentality of contemporary ritual structures in northwestern Europe.
About the speaker:
Colin Renfrew FBA (Lord Renfrew of Kaimsthorn) is Emeritus Disney Professor of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge and former Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research. He has directed excavations in the Cycladic islands of Greece and elsewhere.
