Economic impossibilities for our grandchildren?

Prominent economists have recently revived the hypothesis that ‘secular stagnation’ – negligible or zero economic growth – could lead to permanently depressed economies, in the absence of appropriate policy counter-measures. This lecture takes a historical look at the origins of this hypothesis and its plausibility, and speculates about its relevance for policy-makers today.
