20-21 March 2014 Beijing

On 20-21 March 2014, the British Academy and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) held a joint workshop in Beijing, as part of a series of collaborative activities aimed at strengthening scholarly links and promoting policy dialogue. The event successfully brought together 25 leading scholars and policy makers from the UK, China and the USA.

Discussions revolved around the themes of Global Macroeconomic Policy Risks and Governance, Foundations for Sustained and Sustainable Growth Across the World, and the Changing Structure of the Chinese Economy in the Context of a Changing World. Presentations focused on a variety of topical issues, including managing uncertainties in the global economy; recovery in the aftermath of the global financial crisis; challenges of economic transition; and the interplay between climate security, urbanisation and economic growth.

The British Academy delegation was led by the Academy’s President, Lord Stern of Brentford PBA. On 20 March, Lord Stern met with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ President, Professor Wang Weiguang, and Vice-President, Professor Li Yang. They explored options for deepening and expanding the existing collaborative relationship between the two Academies, and identified policy challenges of international significance which the Academies will seek to address through joint initiatives in the coming years.
