His research has been concerned mainly with the demography of developing countries and he has contributed to elucidating the process of demographic transition through exploring the complex ways in which societies move from high fertility and mortality to low levels of both. Recently he has been working on HIV / AIDS in sub-Saharan African and family planning in rural Pakistan.
