He is an intellectual and literary historian who has published extensively on rhetoric, on Francis Bacon, and on the history of science. He has also published books on Greek tragedy, on Shakespeare's prose, and a six-volume collection illustrating Shakespeare's reception, 1600-1800. Recently, he has been working on attribution problems in Shakespeare and Elizabethan drama.
