She is a distinguished Anglo-Saxon scholar, who has changed the way we look at the art and architecture of the period. She has recently brought to publication her long campaigns of excavation on the Jarrow and Monkwearmouth monastery sites, and has been an inspiring director of the Academy’s Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture.
