Professor Michael Lipton
Professor of Economics, University of Sussex

Year elected: 2006

He has been a leading influence in the definition and redirection of research in Development Economics over the last 40 years. The move away from central planning models of growth towards rural institutions and incentives reflects his influence, as does the focus on poverty reduction as an independent objective. The combination of serious economic theory with detailed empirics and data assembly which his work displays make this a model of what form research in this field should take.
