He is a classical archaeologist of international standing with particular reference to the Roman Empire, especially Italy, and the western provinces including Britain. His interests focus particularly on the social and economic aspects of the archaeology. He has also made significant contributions to both later prehistoric and Anglo-Saxon archaeology.
