His important contributions to regional ethnography (especially New Guinea highlands and Bangladesh) cover a period of more than 30 years, and have focused mainly on knowledge and understanding of exchange and conflict, subsistence activities and material culture. He stands as one of the major world figures in the field of environmental anthropology, tropical farming systems, community natural resource management and the applied aspects of local knowledge systems.
