He is internationally respected as a historical linguist and syntactician. He works mainly on Romance, but has also explored aspects of Germanic, and other, languages. He has made fundamental and lasting contributions to the understanding of the structural evolution of the Romance languages, and to the general theory of language change. He has had a major influence in the cultivation and promotion of Romance and general linguistics in Britain and beyond.
