The neuropsychology of autism (in particular, the phenomenon of mindblindness); the psychology of sex differences in humans; the role of foetal testosterone in neurocognitive development

I have combined my background in clinical psychology with research into cognitive, developmental, and neuroscientific factors in autism spectrum conditions (ASC). The result has been both basic research into causes of ASC, and applied research to evaluate interventions and screening methods for children and adults with ASC. Because ASC affects males far more often than females, my research has also taken me into the field of sex differences, at the level of psychology, and the biological underpinnings of these. Becoming a Fellow of the British Academy is a wonderful honour and surprise, and represents the opportunity to emerge from the narrow tunnel that research inevitably requires one to go down, to interact with distinguished colleagues in neighbouring fields.
