China: Joint Projects with Partner Academies

The British Academy/Economic and Social Research Council Agreements with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) offer small-scale support for joint projects between British scholars and scholars based at institutes of those Academies. Agreements with the Sichuan and Shandong Academies of Social Sciences support joint projects between British scholars and scholars based in Sichuan and Shandong (whether employed by the provincial Academy or not).

Visits in connection with joint projects may include attendance at joint seminars, conferences or workshops as well as visits to undertake collaborative research. The funding is not intended to cover major research expenses, for which support must be sought elsewhere. Both partner Academies must agree to accept the project within the terms of the Agreement, and British applicants should ensure that their Chinese partners are simultaneously applying to their own Academy. Click here for individual research visits.

Level of award: travel and maintenance expenses.
Period of award: CASS: up to two person-months. SASS: one person-month. CAS and Sichuan: variable. Shandong: two joint projects per year, up to £4,000 from each side. (seek advice on availability of quota).
