British Academy: The UK's National Academy for the Humanities and Social Sciences

Four schemes are available for visits to Japan, funded jointly or wholly by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
British Academy/JSPS Joint Projects
The British Academy and the JSPS operate an Agreement to support joint projects in the humanities and social sciences (prior to 2004 the Agreement supported individual research visits). British scholars should apply to the Academy; Japanese scholars should apply simultaneously to the JSPS.
Level of award: up to £5,000 per annum from the British Academy, with an equivalent sum available from the JSPS for the Japanese partner.
Period of award: up to two years.

Method of application: Applications must be submitted via e-GAP2, the Academy's electronic grant application system.

JSPS Short Term Award Programme
This Programme provides the opportunity for special short-term visits for young pre- and post-doctoral researchers for cooperative research with leading research groups at Japanese Universities and Institutions. The scheme is administered by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science London Office (JSPS LLO), and information may be sought from either the JSPS LLO or the International Relations Department at the British Academy.
Level of award: Travel and maintenance expenses
Period of award: 1 to 12 months

Method of application: The British partner should apply on the JSPS Short Term Award Programme form, available from the JSPS LLO.
JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships
In its capacity as foreign nominating authority, the British Academy is entitled to nominate up to three candidates for JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships each year. They are available to British scholars who have received a doctoral degree within the past six years and whose research is in the humanities and social sciences. Level of award: Travel and maintenance expenses.
Period of award: Twelve to twenty-four months.

JSPS Invitation Fellowship Programme
This is a channel for senior scholars to make visits to Japan. Applications should be made directly to the JSPS by the Japanese hosts. For more information, see the JSPS website.
