British Academy: The UK's National Academy for the Humanities and Social Sciences
Guidance on Strategic Research Plans
The sponsored organisations each have different origins and histories, and make distinctive contributions. Alongside that, the Academy asks that they all:
- Take a strategic and integrated approach in developing their research plans and programmes
- Offer broad coverage of disciplines across the humanities and social sciences, time periods, and regional research themes
- Focus financial support on a small number of flagship projects
- Promote multi-disciplinary and collaborative research, working with other research institutions and in partnership with higher education institutions
- Coordinate plans and projects with the activities of the Academy's Area Panels, where relevant
- Pursue other sources of project funding, alongside grant-in-aid from the Academy
- Adopt ways of working that complement and do not overlap with other Academy funding programmes. In particular, this involves working with the Research Grants Programme to contribute evaluations of applications received by the Academy, and not running overlapping responsive grant schemes (limiting grants to targeted research priorities or those on a modest scale, strategically focused to encourage diversification and promote future collaborative working where, for example, applicants would not be eligible for Academy funding)
- Avoid occurrences of dual-funding: it is not allowable for an individual researcher to apply for, or be in receipt of two Academy awards within the same year, whether such awards are made directly by the Academy or indirectly via a sponsored institution
- Place strong emphasis on dissemination and publication of research outcomes.
