From British involvement in the Independence of Colombia, to the present-day Colombian diaspora which has made the UK its home, relations between Britain and Colombia have long been strong.  The 200th anniversary of the Independence of Colombia provided the context for this event organised by the British Academy, Embassy of Colombia in the UK and Colciencias, which reviewed the history of relations between the UK and Colombia, and looked forward to future collaborations through the signing of an agreement of co-operation between the British Academy and Colciencias.

About the Speakers

Dr Gustavo Bell is a Colombian historian, journalist, lawyer and politician who served as Vice President of Colombia from 1998 to 2002.
Dr Matthew Brown is a Senior Lecturer in Latin American Studies and Director of the Centre for the Study of Colonial and Postcolonial Societies at the University of Bristol.  He has written extensively on the Wars of Independence in Latin America.
Professor Anthony McFarlane is Professor of History in the School of Comparative American Studies and Department of History at the University of Warwick.  His current research centres on the Spanish American wards of independence in the period 1810-1825.
Dr Juan Francisco Miranda is the Director of Colciencias, Colombia's Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, a Colombian government agency that supports scientific research.
Dr Eduardo Posada-Carbo is a lecturer in Latin American Politics and a Research Associate at the Latin American Centre at the University of Oxford, where he completed his PhD in Modern History.  His major interests are in the comparative history and comparative politics of Latin America.
Professor Peter Wade is Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester.  His current research focusses on race and sexuality in Latin America and he recently held a British Academy award which supported a seminar programme between Colombia and the UK which focussed on this theme.
