The list below shows only the countries with which the British Academy has special funding arrangements, through Agreements, Memoranda of Understanding or special grant schemes.

British Academy Research Grants may be used anywhere in the world.

Commonwealth countries: The British Academy/Association of Commonwealth Universities Joint Projects scheme: grants for joint projects between British and Commonwealth scholars. Note: the British Academy currently has a formal agreement with Australia, but with no other Commonwealth country.

Africa: International Partnerships scheme to support the development of ongoing links between UK and African research centres or institutions.

Latin America/Caribbean: UK-Latin America and the Caribbean Link Programme scheme to support the development of links between the UK and Latin America and/or the Caribbean.

South East Asia: The ASEASUK Research Committee on South East Asian Studies: Grants for research on South East Asia are available from this Academy-sponsored committee.

Middle East : International Partnerships scheme developed to promote links between the UK and the Middle East.

South Asia : International Partnerships scheme to develop academic and research links between the UK and South Asia.


China: (a) Agreements with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and the Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences, providing support for individual research visits to China. (b) Joint Projects and symposia with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, the Shandong Academy of Social Sciences and the Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences. (c) Sino-British Fellowship Trust: grants for collaborative research with Chinese scholars

Georgia: Agreement with the Georgian Academy of Sciences, providing the opportunity for individual research visits to Georgia, and joint projects between British and Georgian scholars.

Japan: (a) Agreement with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences, providing support for joint projects between British and Japanese scholars. (b) JSPS Short Term Award Programme: provides the opportunity for special short-term visits for young pre- and post-doctoral researchers for cooperative research with leading research groups at Japanese Universities and Institutions. (c) JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships: grants to enable British scholars at the early postdoctoral level to spend up to two years in Japan. (d) The British Academy also has a special agreement with the Japan Academy, but it is restricted to Fellows of the two Academies.

South Korea: Agreement with the National Academy of Sciences of Korea, providing the opportunity for individual research visits to Korea by senior scholars.

Russia: Agreement with the Russian Academy of Sciences, providing the opportunity for individual research visits to Russia, and joint projects between British and Russian scholars.

Singapore: The British Academy has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, National University of Singapore, under which support for joint projects between scholars in the UK and Singapore may be provided. Consult the International Relations Department for further information.

Taiwan: (a) Agreement with the Academia Sinica, providing the opportunity for individual research visits to Taiwan. (b) British Academy/Academia Sinica Joint Projects scheme, providing grants for joint projects, seminars, and workshops between British and Taiwanese scholars. (c) British Academy/National Science Council of Taiwan Joint Projects scheme, providing grants for joint projects between British and Taiwanese scholars.

USA: Agreements with two American libraries, the Huntington and the Newberry, providing the opportunity for visits to the libraries. An Agreement with the American Philosophical Society to support research visits to Philadelphia.
