Reassessing the 1970s
Panel discussion held at the British Academy on 23 September 2009.
Was the UK ungovernable, benighted in a state of social and economic collapse during the 1970s, or was that decade a period of significant social progress and creativity? A group of eminent historians sought to put the UK's achievements and failures during the 1970s in historical, social, economic and international context, and set the agenda for the future study of the period.
