British Academy calls on European Parliament to support vital EU research funding

5 Feb 2013

As the second European Union 2014-2020 Budget Summit commences later this week – the British Academy today calls for continued commitment to a properly funded EU research budget. In a letter to the President of the European Parliament, the Academy asks that the European Parliament recognises the vital role research and innovation has in helping drive economic growth as well as research excellence.

Professor Dame Helen Wallace, British Academy Foreign Secretary and Vice-President, said: “A cut in the proposed budget for Horizon 2020 would represent a clear own goal in our drive for growth, jobs, wealth creation and understanding and resolving the societal changes we face today. It is now essential that the European Parliament recognises the fundamental need for responsible levels of research and innovation funding.”
