Academy releases statement on the proposed regulation to establish European Fund for Strategic Investments

18 Feb 2015

The British Academy has today released a statement on the proposed regulation to establish the European Fund for Strategic Investments (‘EFSI’), which would cut the EU’s research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020, by €2.7 billion. These are deep and damaging cuts, particularly affecting the EU’s ability to respond to grand challenges and develop excellent research. The Academy believes that this would undermine Europe’s ability to fuel sustainable prosperity and growth by neglecting the substantial contribution that high-quality research and innovation makes to our economy and society. In addition, the Academy is concerned with weaknesses in the EFSI’s proposed governance, accountability and priorities.
