Government renews Grant-in-Aid for the British Academy
The Academy is pleased to have been allocated a Grant-in-Aid totalling more than £74m for 2008-2011 triennium, following the Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review 2007. The annual allocation for the three years of the CSR period is:
- 2008-9: £22,539,790
- 2009-10: £25,061,939
- 2010-11: £26,447,813
The Academy brings a distinctive approach to the support it gives to research of the highest quality in the humanities and social sciences, and it submitted an ambitious programme of activity to be funded over the next three years through its Grant-in-Aid.
The programme identifies as priorities:
- Support for early career researchers through an expansion of the Academy's flagship postdoctoral fellowships
- Flexible support for mid-career research through the new British Academy research development awards
- Strengthening of international collaboration and opportunities for international engagement (including participation in a new UK International Fellowships scheme).
- Communication of the value of research of humanities and social sciences to the economy and quality of life
Baroness O'Neill, President of the British Academy, said: "This renewed allocation of Grant-in-Aid will enable the British Academy to continue to offer leadership on behalf of the humanities and social sciences, through a wide-ranging programme of funded support for researchers in these disciplines, whose value to society grows in importance."
Robin Jackson, Chief Executive and Secretary, said: "A great deal of work went into the submission for the Academy's renewed Grant-in-Aid. Today's formal announcement of funding is a welcome recognition of the significance of the programmes that the Academy offers. With these resources the Academy will continue to deliver support for research in the humanities and social sciences that is carefully targeted to meet the needs of researchers. We are also pleased to be a partner in the new International Fellowships scheme, which will help attract the best postdoctoral researchers from around the world to come to the UK to pursue their work."
