Learning to love languages
23 Mar 2012
The British Academy welcomes the Lords EU Committee's call on the Government to overcome the UK's lack of mobility including by making language learning compulsory in primary and secondary schools. In its report, the Modernisation of Higher Education in Europe, published 22 March 2012, the Committee warns that this lack of mobility coupled with the current financial, socio-economic and cultural barriers mean that the UK's future participation in mobility programmes cannot be assured. The British Academy's international conference, Valuing the Year Abroad, due to be held on Tuesday 27 March, will provide the platform to launch a position statement raising these very concerns.
