ODA Challenge-Oriented Research Grants 2024: frequently asked questions

Who must provide the list of due diligence documentation and complete Page 3 (Due Diligence) of the online application form?

The due diligence section only needs to be completed if the lead applicant (Principal Investigator) is based overseas. UK-based lead applicants and any overseas co-applicants/partners do not need to complete this section of the online application form.

I am having trouble accessing the additional ODA guidance document linked in the scheme notes, how can I access this?

We are sorry to hear you had trouble accessing the additional ODA guidance document. Please use this alternative link to gain access to this document: ODA guidance.

Point 35c of Eligibility (costs) section states ‘training and development for the PI and early career researcher Co-Applicants' is an eligible cost. Are training and development costs only eligible for early career Co-Applicants?

We apologise for the confusion caused by this. This is an error, and the guidance 35c should state the following: ‘training and development for the PI and Co-Applicants'. Training and development costs are not only for early career Co-Applicants.

In the Environmental Resilience and Climate Action call, point 9 of the Programme Aims & Scope of the Call section focuses on ‘the importance of women in building climate resilience and empowering women to deliver climate solutions’, is this required?

We apologise for the confusion caused by this. Point 9 should not reference ‘the importance of women in building climate resilience and empowering women to delivery climate solutions’ for the Environmental Resilience and Climate Action call.

What qualification is required for Principal Investigators and Co-Applicants?

For the ODA Challenge-Oriented Research Grants both Principal Investigators and Co-Applicants are required to have a PhD. Applicants who are awaiting the outcome of their viva or the submission of corrections will not be considered eligible.

Equivalent research experience may be sufficient where an applicant does not hold a PhD. This will look different in different contexts and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. You should contact the International Team at [email protected] to check your eligibility before applying if you do not have a PhD but feel you can demonstrate equivalent research experience.

How do I register my institution as a PI?

If you are the PI for an ODA Challenge-Oriented Research Grants application and your home institution is not registered on Flexi-Grant, please contact the International Team: [email protected]

Please note that certain colleges or institutions may be located under broader institutional classifications.

Will the British Academy put me in contact with a UK institution?
