There are two footnote series keyed to line numbers in the text. The first series is the apparatus of variants, the second gives references to passages Ockham quotes and other information or comment.
In the first footnote series the following sigla and names occur:
Sigla for editions and manuscripts -- see Witnesses to
the text
Ww: All the witnesses
Fb: Corpus iuris canonici, ed. A. Friedberg,
Leipzig, 1879
Letters "-m" and "-b" added to a witness siglum (e.g. "Frm", Frb") mean that the variant is found in the margin or between lines in the witness (e.g. Fr).
If any of these sigla or names appear in the apparatus between "]" and ":" the meaning is that the witness, text or editor indicated by the siglum or name is the source of the wording of the text, while the variants after the colon are found in the witnesses whose sigla follow the variant. Thus "et universis] Ki: universis et Ww" means that the words of the text, "et universis", are a conjectural emendation by Kilcullen, with all the witnesses reading "universis et". Similarly "perspexerit] Vulg: prospexerit Mz Pz Ly" means that "perspexerit" is the reading of the Vulgate text, which we have followed, while Mz, Pz and Ly all read "prospexerit".
Variants of the following kind are not noted in the apparatus: dittography; presence or absence of "c." (in canon law references); variation between igitur and ergo; transpositions that do not affect meaning; differences of spelling; variation between arabic and roman numerals; deletions and marginal and interlinear changes apparently made by the original scribe. (See editorial policy, para. 20.) These variations can be found in the fuller collation, available elsewhere at this web site.
Some witnesses are reported fully (except for variants of the kinds listed above) and others not; see editorial policy, para. 17. Witnesses regularly reported are listed in the introductions to the relevant sections of the text or at the beginning of each page of the apparatus. If no variant is mentioned for one of these, that implies that it has the same reading as the editors' text. Other witnesses are reported when the editor judges that a variant is interesting. A fuller report of variants found in other witnesses is available on the web.
In the second footnote series, column numbers for the ordinary gloss on canon law refer to the edition of Lyons, 1671 (see editorial policy, para. 23); other canon law column numbers refer to the Corpus iuris canonici, ed. A. Friedberg, Leipzig, 1879. In either case, if the reference in the text includes the word "Extra", the passage will be found in volume 2, otherwise it is in volume 1. Canon law references given in the text in the medieval form have not been given also in modern form in the footnotes (see editorial policy, para. 23).
The draft critical edition contains some lines that are too long, "widow" and "orphan" lines, faults with running headers, etc. These faults will be corrected later.
Queries and comments appear in bold in the text. These will be eliminated later.
At a later stage we will eliminate less significant variants from the apparatus
For 1 Dial. 1-4 we have (as an experiment) reduced the witnesses regularly reported to four, viz. Bb/Fi, Ly, Pa/Vg, Vc.
Spelling conventions will be reconsidered later. (See editorial policy, para. 13.)
Canon law references in the medieval form in the text have not been given also in modern form in the footnotes, but a column reference is given to the current edition (of Friedberg). (See editorial policy, para. 23.)
