Dr Isabella Jackson

Dr. Isabella Jackson is Assistant Professor in Chinese History at Trinity College Dublin, where she is based in the Department of History and the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies. She is the author of Shaping Modern Shanghai: Colonialism in China’s Global City (Cambridge University Press, 2017) and co-editor (with Robert Bickers) of Treaty Ports in Modern China: Law, Land and Power (Routledge, 2016).

Project Description:

A British Academy Visiting Fellowship is enabling Dr. Jackson to spend six months at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, working in consultation with Dr. Andrea Janku. At SOAS. Dr. Jackson will work on her new project examining changing responses to child slavery in twentieth century China using the rich missionary archive and Chinese newspaper holdings at SOAS Library and related materials in other London libraries and The National Archives.
