‘Global Disinformation Architectures: A Comparative Framework in Evaluating and Designing Interventions to Information Disorder’
Dr. Jonathan Corpus Ong is Associate Professor in Global Digital Media at the Department of Communication, University of Massachusetts in Amherst, USA. Moving beyond the current focus on social media manipulation’s impact on the United States elections, the project aims to critically examine practices in populist communication and networked disinformation production in global context.
Drawing from comparative case studies in Southeast Asia and Europe, it rejects a one-size-fits-all approach to addressing information disorders and develops a new concept of “global disinformation architectures” that can guide the design of culturally appropriate disinformation interventions. The project will be hosted at the Department of Journalism in City, University of London, where Dr. Ong aims to collaborate with the Humanitarian News Research Network and other colleagues in journalism studies.
Dr. Ong has previously published the report ‘Architects of Networked Disinformation’, examining the political trolling industry in the Philippines: http://newtontechfordev.com/newton-tech4dev-research-identifies-ad-pr-executives-chief-architects-fake-news-production-social-media-trolling/.
