Economics for consumer policy

Wed 29 Oct 2003, 00:00

Consumer law is a major area of public policy for markets, but economics has contributed much less to it than to competition policy. The lecture will review the economic foundations for consumer policy, including rationales for public constraints on freedom of contract. Parallels, and some possible tensions, between competition and consumer policies will be emphasised. The overall theme of the lecture will be that economics has much more to offer to public policy for consumers.
