The principal aim of the John Foxe Project is to produce a variorum edition of the most famous work of protestant martyrology, The Acts and Monuments of the English Martyrs by John Foxe (1516–1587). This was an immense text, whose history during Foxe's lifetime is extremely complex, involving two initial sketches in Latin and four more substantial, subsequent English editions. It is hard to underestimate the influence of this work on contemporaries and on later historians of the English Reformation. A full, accurate, critical, variorum edition of the four English editions of the text is in preparation, to the highest standards of scholarship and accuracy, and with complementary critical apparatus.
