British Academy responds to postgraduate loans announcement

3 Dec 2014

Responding to the announcement about loans for postgraduate study in today's Autumn Statement from the Chancellor of the Exchequer, British Academy Chief Executive Dr Robin Jackson said:

"We are delighted to note the Chancellor's recognition of the importance of science and research, and the announcement of a new government-backed loan system for postgraduate taught study. The British Academy has repeatedly expressed concerns over postgraduate funding and called on the government to address the funding needs of students wishing to pursue postgraduate study. We note the continuing needs of students pursuing research degrees, especially in the humanities and social sciences.

"Today's announcement recognises the value of postgraduate study, and its importance for the health of UK universities and research, and for high level skills to contribute to the economy, society and culture.

"I hope it will lead to an increase in postgraduate enrolments in all disciplines, and help maintain the UK’s enviable reputation for research and teaching."
