Disabled Access to the British Academy

The British Academy is committed to actively helping all clients and guests with disabilities to use and enjoy the facilities at the British Academy’s 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, London. However, due to the Grade I listing of the building, there are currently a number of restrictions in place in relation to access for motorised or battery powered wheelchairs and vehicles.

The British Academy is committed to actively helping all clients and guests with disabilities to use and enjoy the facilities at the British Academy’s 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, London. However, due to the Grade I listing of the building, there are a number of restrictions in place in relation to access for motorised or battery powered wheelchairs and vehicles. 

The British Academy has a dedicated stair climber to assist all standard wheelchairs. We also have a dedicated but temporary ramp to enable standard wheelchair users access to the ground floor lobby area.

Due to listed building prohibitions, the British Academy also only has two small passenger lifts for access to other floors of the building. Due to their space and size, combined with their concertina doors and dual floor access points, these lifts cannot accommodate anything larger than a standard wheelchair, so are unable to take motorised or battery powered vehicles.

In the light of these restrictions, may we respectfully request that clients and organisations using the building who have disabled access requirements, provide the British Academy with exact specifications and details of access requested from all disabled guests, visitors or attendees, which must be submitted seven working days prior to your event, in order to ensure that access can be provided, wherever possible, to all public areas and meeting rooms.
