Jonathan Bate: The Theatre of Shakespeare's Sonnets

Professor Sir Jonathan Bate FBA, Provost, Worcester College, University of Oxford

‘The Theatre of Shakespeare’s Sonnets’

Recorded at the British Academy Soirée, Tuesday 28 June 2016

Professor Sir Jonathan Bate is a renowned Shakespeare scholar known for his work in collaboration with theatre practitioners. How can the Sonnets be turned into theatre? How theatrical are they? As part of his research for this project, Sir Jonathan has been working with a group of young actors, who join him in a short workshop that turns a cluster of the sonnets into a theatrical encounter between a trio of characters: the poet, the beautiful young man, and the ‘dark’ lady.
