Has multiculturalism really failed in Britain?
5pm, Tuesday 28 June 2016
Multiculturalism is a contentious concept, but in essence it means giving members of cultural minorities rights and opportunities to maintain their distinctive cultures. This has given rise to concerns that this has led minorities to stay separate from mainstream British society, to preserve some non-British values, and to lead ‘parallel lives’. But how far do minorities actually stay separate from the mainstream? And if they do, can this really be attributed to multicultural policies. Should it instead be attributed to their recent arrival in Britain, to economic disadvantage, or to an unfriendly reception from Britons? This talk will bring some evidence to bear on these questions.
