Aristotle’s Rhetoric in China: Translation, Politics, and Abridgement

This project will study the first Chinese translation of Aristotle’s Rhetoric by Luo Niansheng within a crosscultural context of exchanges of texts and concepts, as well as in the political and cultural contexts of 1950s and 1960s China. The research will be carried out in collaboration with Prof. Lene Rubinstein at the Department of Classics, Royal Holloway University of London, to contribute to the emerging research fields of Global Classics and reception studies. The project will considerably advance scholarly understanding of Chinese reception of the Graeco-Roman world and its legacy, in particular, the reception of ancient Greek and Roman rhetoric in non-European, and especially East Asian, contexts.
