Pierre Singaravélou

This research project is a continuation of Professor Pierre Singaravélou’s work for 20 years at the crossroads of sciences studies, colonial, imperial and global histories. It will study the history of pan-Asianism in an imperial context, from the 1880s to the late 1930s, that is to say all the political and cultural discourses and practices that consider that Asia can be defined as a region with common characteristics, a huge territory capable of inducing transnational forms of solidarity, of promoting continent-wide political integration or of playing a singular role in world politics. In order to understand precisely the origins and the evolution of these new ideologies, this projects intends to follow activists and intellectuals who lived in, moved and wrote between Asian countries (Japan, India, China, Korea, Vietnam) and Europe (United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland).
