Panel Discussion at Gay marriage: prospects and realities at the British Academy

Civil partnerships became part of the UK's social landscape in 2004. Now, with the likelihood that Parliament will pass legislation to give same-sex marriage equal status with longstanding British patterns of heterosexual marriage, this British Academy panel discussion sets out to explore some of the deeper implications. It's a topic that is clearly dividing public opinion, but what insights and conclusions can we draw from considered theological, philosophical and legal reflections on the reasons behind this striking shift in British society? And what implications does it have for our society in the future?

The outcomes of this panel discussion will be fed into the Government's public consultation on 'Equal civil marriage'.
